WHY IPL?

Banish brown spots, remove years of sun damage, reduce facial redness and broken capillaries, and improve your skin’s overall tone and luminosity.

Dull, discolored, and uneven skin riddled with brown spots and redness can make us look years older. As we age, the damaging rays of the sun we enjoyed in our past can come back to haunt us as unattractive dark spots (age spots) on our face and body, broken vessels, and persistent facial redness. Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is the industry’s gold standard for removing brown spots and redness and achieving a bright, even skin tone.

Our Lumenis M22™ Universal IPL with Optimal Pulse Technology (OPT™) is unparalleled in its versatility to treat multiple skin concerns in a single treatment. The M22™ IPL’s computer-enabled filter recognition and three SapphireCool™ light guides make it one of the safest, most customizable, and comfortable IPL devices.

THE PROCESS

While traditional lasers emit a single wavelength of light to target a particular skin concern, IPL emits several wavelengths to address a broader range of skin concerns during a single treatment. Your Certified Laser Technician will customize the filters she uses during your procedure to focus on areas of darker pigmentation, individual broken facial capillaries (telangiectasias), and areas of redness or rosacea. Targeted areas will absorb the energy from the pulsed light, without compromising the surrounding skin. As a result, dark spots will grow even darker over the following days and gradually flake off to reveal a brighter, more even skin tone. Broken capillaries will initially turn grey and gradually fade away, and facial redness will progressively calm and clear with repeated treatments.

At The Refinery Skin Clinic, your IPL treatment is performed by an Advanced Practice Esthetician who is also a Certified Laser Technician. During your consultation, she will ensure that you are a good candidate for IPL and discuss how to properly care for your skin before and after your IPL for enhanced results.

During your treatment, you and your provider will wear protective eyewear as she moves the pulsing laser handpiece across your clean skin in a series of passes. Each pulse is accompanied by a bright flash of light and a mild snapping sensation. Special attention is given to broken facial capillaries on the nose and cheeks, and individual brown spots. M22™ IPL can be performed virtually anywhere on the body where damage is present, but the most popular areas are the face, neck, chest, and hands.

THE RESULTS

Immediately following your treatment, your skin may feel slightly warm and tight, similar to a mild sunburn. Treated pigmentation will initially appear darker before sloughing off over the next 7-14 days. You may notice more pigment initially due to IPL’s ability to treat damage in deeper layers of skin that has not surfaced yet. To protect the emerging healthy skin, avoid scrubbing, rubbing, or picking at these darkened areas. Use a SPF 30+ daily after your treatment to protect your skin and prevent future damage.

If you and provider have chosen to target facial redness and broken vessels, you will notice some slight swelling in treated areas and greying of treated vessels. The IPL causes these broken vessels to collapse, and they will fade over the next 7-14 days. Multiple treatments are generally needed to see significant improvements in rosacea and facial flushing, but increased clarity and decreased redness can be seen after each treatment.

Most clients experience a substantial and visible improvement with one IPL treatment. Still, a series of at least three treatments spaced 3-4 weeks apart is generally recommended, especially if extensive sun damage or redness is present. Once a series is completed, many clients choose to maintain their results with an annual treatment each fall or winter.   

Please note, IPL is not recommended when you have an active tan on your skin. Some oral prescriptions and topical skincare ingredients may make you more sensitive to IPL. Your laser provider will discuss these special concerns during your consultation.
