INTENSE PULSED LIGHT (IPL)

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is the industry’s gold-standard treatment for removing sun damage and dark spots and improving skin clarity and tone.

WHY IPL?

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) restores a brighter, clearer, more even skin tone and safely reduces facial redness.

An uneven skin tone can make us look years older than we actually are. Whether you’re battling brown spots and sun damage from years of unprotected UV exposure or tired of covering up broken blood vessels and facial redness, Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) can significantly improve the clarity of your skin and brighten your overall complexion.

Refinery Skin Clinic has selected the Lumenis M22™ Universal IPL with Optimal Pulse Technology (OPT™) as our photorejuvenation technology. It is unparalleled in its versatility to treat multiple skin concerns in a single treatment. The M22™ IPL’s computer-enabled filter recognition and three SapphireCool™ light guides make it one of the safest, most customizable, and most comfortable IPL devices on the market.

THE PROCESS

Treat a broad range of skin concerns in a single treatment with IPL

While traditional lasers emit a single wavelength of light to target a particular skin concern, IPL emits several wavelengths to address a broader range of skin concerns during a single treatment. After determining that you are a good candidate for IPL, your Refinery Skin Clinic provider will customize the filters they use during your procedure to focus on areas of darker pigmentation, individual broken facial capillaries (telangiectasias), and patches of redness or rosacea. Each IPL treatment is highly personalized to each client.

During your treatment, you and your provider will wear protective eyewear as they move the pulsing laser handpiece across your clean skin in a series of passes. Each pulse is accompanied by a bright flash of light and a mild snapping sensation. Special attention is given to broken facial capillaries on the nose and cheeks and individual brown spots. M22™ IPL can be performed virtually anywhere on the body where damage is present, but the most popular areas are the face, neck, chest, and hands.

With each pass of the IPL handpiece, targeted areas will absorb the energy from the pulsed light without compromising the surrounding skin. As a result, dark spots will grow even darker over the following days and gradually flake off to reveal a brighter, more even skin tone beneath. With repeated treatments, broken capillaries will initially turn grey and slowly fade away, and facial redness will progressively calm and clear.

THE RESULTS

See a significant improvement in your skin’s tone and clarity in as little as one treatment.

Immediately following IPL, your skin may feel slightly warm and tight, similar to a mild sunburn. Dark spots may initially appear darker before sloughing off over the next 7-14 days. You might notice more pigment initially due to IPL’s ability to treat damage in deeper layers of skin that has not surfaced yet. To protect the emerging healthy skin, avoid scrubbing, rubbing, or picking at any darkened areas. You must apply a daily SPF 30+ after treatment to protect your skin and prevent future damage.

If your IPL treatment targeted facial redness and broken vessels, you might notice slight swelling in treated areas and greying of treated vessels. The IPL causes these broken vessels to collapse, and they will fade over the next 7-14 days. Multiple treatments are generally needed to see significant improvements in rosacea and facial flushing, but increased clarity and decreased redness can be seen after each treatment.

Most clients experience a substantial and visible improvement with one IPL treatment. However, a series of at least three treatments spaced 3-4 weeks apart is generally recommended, especially if extensive sun damage or redness is present. Once a series is completed, many clients maintain their results with an annual treatment each fall or winter. For clients concerned about skin texture AND tone, IPL can be combined with ResurFX™ laser resurfacing in a treatment called “Photofractional” to smooth the skin’s surface while simultaneously improving clarity.

Refinery Skin Clinic providers strongly recommend using SkinMedica’s EVEN & CORRECT product line and the LUMIVIVE™ System before and after your IPL to accelerate, enhance, and maintain your results. EVEN & CORRECT’s trio of pigment-busting products will further improve your skin’s clarity and also prevent future pigmentation from forming. LUMIVIVE™ will provide a bio-barrier against blue light and other environmental aggressors from damaging skin during the day and recharges the skin’s essential repair process at night. We also recommend a physical SPF, like SkinMedica’s Total Defense + Repair Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 34, to protect your skin after IPL.
